The Year 9 girls designed their ‘Water-Phant’ system for use in sub-Saharan Africa. It uses the natural energy of the sun to produce clean water from contaminated supplies.

The final ‘Water-Phant’ design is a simple water purification device that uses the energy of the sun to evaporate and condense water from contaminated supplies using a simple transparent cloche. The target community was Ghana where there are sufficient day-night temperature differentials, and many communities have access to water, but the supply is not suitable for drinking.

The winning Arnewood Team, Ellie, Jemma, Savanna and Lois were accompanied by their parents and teacher Dr. Heidi Shaw to the awards ceremony.

Westminster Work Placement

Arnewood students Glyn Rice-Mundy and Jack Rickard were invited to spend four days in Westminster on a work experience placement in the Houses of Parliament by local Conservative MP the Rt Hon Desmond Swayne.

Jack Rickard reports, "We were given tours of both Houses, the Commons and the Lords which provided great insight into the workings of Parliament and the way in which the United Kingdom is governed. But
all was not as it might at first seem when this March the Lions Club of New
Milton hosted a ‘Lions' Den’ event at the Arnewood School in New Milton. This
evening was based on the T.V. Programme Dragon’s Den and involved six teams of
students competing for a share of the £1000 sponsored by the Lions Club.
Each
team selected a charity of their choice, researched its unique points and
prepared a variety of presentations, which they ‘performed’ before an audience
of family, students and members of the Lions Club. The presentations were
bright, colourful and full of detail incorporating various media, I.T., music,
dance and video. Some of the students were able to relate their chosen charity
to their own personal experience which was particularly moving and influential
making it a challenging choice for the judges.
The presentations were judged
by the Mayor of New Milton, Councillor Neil Tungate, local solicitor Mr. Ed
Stack and the President of New Milton Lions Club, Nick Mussert who based their
decisions on four criteria- the students’ presentations skills, the team
involvement, and the benefits each charity gave to the local community and the
reason for the students’ choice of charity.
Six charities benefitted from a
proportional share of the prize money - ‘Mango Tree Goa’ (led by Jamie Morton
and Harriet Devlin), ‘Julia’s House’ (presented by Tara Pressey and Rebecca
Branch), ‘The Libra Foundation’ (by Beth Waghorn and Sian Butt), ‘Juvenile
Diabetic Research Foundation’ (by Megan Shutler and Jenny O’Connor) and’ New
Forest Trust’ (by Cathryn Stocker, Chloe Bellamy and Jack Davies). The overall
prize was awarded by Lion President Nick Mussert to the ‘I-Talk’ team
presentation given by Tia Biggs, Ruth Brimble and Alex Holland.

This was accompanied by a tutorial on how to use the paper based and digital library systems.

As part of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), students must complete a 5,000 word dissertation project on a topic of their choice. This year students are conducting projects in topics including psychology, medicine, history, chemistry, physics, media, music, photography and more. The quality of the research will be the foundation of their project and Southampton University has kindly granted a year’s unlimited free access to their libraries for all these students to visit independently.

Students spent over four hours conducting research online, in journals and from books to contribute to their formal project proposals. The EPQ is becoming a more influential indicator to university application and Southampton University is among a number of universities which encouraging participation in Extended Project learning.

This cohort will complete their projects for October 2013 after they have taken part in our first EPQ Symposium event where all students will present their work to other students, parents and staff in September. The group were accompanied by Mr. Osborne who would like to thank the University for being welcoming hosts.

Christmas Arts Festival

The school's Christmas Art Festival proved to be one of the highlights of the term with spectacular dance, drama and music being performed to a packed hall. 26 candles were lit in sympathy with the families from Newton and in memory of the victims of the sad events at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The evening was given an international feel with a vibrant performance of Bollywood dance.
Celebrations are underway at The Arnewood School Academy in New Milton after students achieved record GCSE and A-level results.

91 per cent of GCSE students gained five or more A*-C grades, compared to 89 per cent last year and 75 per cent gained five A*-C grades including English and Maths, compared to 68 per cent last year.

Earlier this year SSAT, a UK representative body for schools, named Arnewood as among the UK’s top ten per cent of schools for inspiring students to push academic boundaries and excel at Key Stage 4.

Last week the school celebrated a 100 per cent A-level pass rate, with 33 per cent of students achieving at least one A*-A grade.

Headteacher Chris Hummerstone said: “These results are a testament to the talent and hard work of our students and the determination and support of staff and parents. Each year we build on the momentum and success of previous years and we’re thrilled our students are making the very best of the opportunities provided.”

The school’s sixth form, which typically welcomes around 240 students, is preparing for record intake this year, with students keen to make the most of its new science and vocational suites and improved facilities.

Record A Levels

The Arnewood School has recorded its best ever crop of A Level grades at A* - 11 in total ( a candidate has to get at least 90% in a subject to gain the highest possible grade).

One student, Mara Pop, achieved 3 A* grades; many other students gained 3 or more grades at A or A* , including Rhianna Cearns, who secured her place at Oxford University to read German.

Over 30% of students achieved at least one A or A* grade and over 50% gained grades between A*- B, with high value added scores and 99% pass rate.

Headteacher Chris Hummerstone said, "We are delighted with these excellent results, congratulate all of our students on their hard earned success and thank all those adults who have helped so much along the way. Our Sixth Form goes from strength to strength: in the new term we will have new Science and vocational suites and enhanced accommodation for what we expect to be our largest ever Sixth Form intake."

Further information about Sixth Form courses can be obtained from Mr. Craig Price, Director of Sixth Form, at The Arnewood School.
Arnewood In Top 10% Nationally

It's official - The Arnewood School is in the top 10% nationally.

Staff and students at The Arnewood School were delighted to receive formal notification from the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust of their outstanding Key Stage 4 performance in 2011. Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of the SSAT, wrote to acknowledge The Arnewood School's achievement, saying "Many congratulations for achieving an outstanding value-added score of 10 [maximum] points".

The comparision is a national benchmark based on the progress made by students who achieve 5 or more A*-C GCSE passes, including English and Mathematics. 68% of students at The Arnewood School achieve this standard, much higher than most schools.
Commenting on the school's success, Mr. Hummerstone, Headteacher, said "We are delighted by this award and the recognition it gives to the hard work of students, parents and teachers within our community. I thank and congratulate everyone involved in this process!".

StreetSense

‘StreetSense’ is a new campaign being launched at The Arnewood School and throughout Hampshire aimed at children, teachers, parents and drivers, to make them more aware of the vulnerability of children near traffic. The aim is to teach children to concentrate more on good road safety habits such as not using mobile phones or earphones to listen to music when walking or cycling in traffic zones. The programme is the initiative of Hampshire County Council.

Students from Y7 and Y9 participated in a range of activities including the ‘Ghost Street’ workshop where various filmed scenarios are viewed and students are asked to identify how the incidents could be avoided and take part in discussions about which character they feel was responsible for causing the incident. Other Y9 students enjoyed learning about safety engineering and computer aided design (CAD) in a workshop to consider and re-design roads to feature measures on the road that could help to improve safety. Younger students took part in the Bikeability cycle safety training and Y7 students viewed an informative assembly led by experts from Hampshire County Council.

Commenting on the launch of StreetSense Mr. Hummerstone commented “We place a significant emphasis on children’s safety and are delighted to be pioneers in sending a strong message about the best way in which students can stay safe on the way to and from school”. He added, “We welcome the improvements that have been made by the County Council to Gore Road to make the journey to school safer for our students.” The improvements include a new advisory 20 mph limits are being introduced outside six schools across the county including Arnewood.

The Arnewood School marked The Queen's Diamond Jubilee with a tea party and tree planting attended by invited guests including Governors, local councillors, parents and staff. Much to the delight of onlookers, a flowering cherry tree was ceremonially planted by Mrs. Elizabeth Cook, Chair of Governors, and Cllr. Neil Tungate, New Milton Mayor.
Afterwards guests were entertained by catering students who had prepared a special Jubilee high tea in the newly renovated school canteen, decorated suitably with union jack bunting. To the sound of live music from the 1950s and 60s, performed by students, guests reminisced about the reign of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Headteacher, Christopher Hummerstone commented, “The students have worked very hard to prepare for the party and it is wonderful to mark this significant milestone with such a memorable occasion in school.”
Elsewhere in the academy this week, students have been commemorating the Jubilee in the classroom. Patriotic Year 7 students enjoyed producing decorative plates proudly displayed in the History department. Each year group will plant further trees as a lasting tribute.

Hoax Threat

“We received a hoax threat by email, saying that an incendiary device had been planted on site.
The Arnewood School is installing a cashless catering system in June 2012. The new system will allow us to continue with the development of the school meal service and provide a more efficient, faster and better quality of delivery.
This system eliminates the need for students to carry cash throughout the day, whilst also ensuring that the money you provide for your child’s meals is actually spent on food! The cashless system is also biometric so there is no need for students to carry a card. The system will recognise the thumb of your child (stored as a series of numbers) at the tills.

The cashless system will commence on Monday 25th June 2012. No cash will be accepted at the till points after this date.
There are two payment options available – online payments or cheque payments to the finance office. Any amount of money can be paid into a student’s account and food and drink costs will be deducted on a daily basis. A daily ‘spend limit’ of £5 will be programmed into the system. This can be increased or decreased for an individual student by making a written request to the school finance office. If your child is entitled to free school meals please ensure they are confidentially registered at the Finance Office.

If you choose not to have your child registered on the Biometric System, please write to the Finance Office by Monday 28th May 2012 and a 4 digit PIN Code will be allocated. Please note that PIN Codes do not have the same level of security and it will be your child’s responsibility to remember the code and keep it secure at all times.

Digital Leaders video blog

Students in the Digital Leaders group have been blogging since February 2011. One section of the blog looks at tools for learning. Students try out a new application, describe how it is used and say whether it is effective. They have already rated 35 different tools, including movie making software, art editors, mind-mapping tools and a range of ways of creating presentations.

Ellie Kerslake, of the Christchurch Seagulls swimming club, became Western Regional Champion in the 200m Backstroke seeing off nine other finalists. Ellie, who has been training since she was aged 7 when she joined the New Milton Torpedoes, saw off the opposition to bring home the gold medal.

In the same championships, Danielle took third place on the 200m Butterfly to bring home the bronze medal. Danielle regularly trains and competes with Swim Bournemouth.

As if victory in the pool were not sufficient reward for the swimming friends, they were lucky to enjoyed a chance meeting with Olympic diver Tom Daley between events. “It was amazing watching him dive in real life – it’s just not something you see every day.” said Ellie. “He was really down to earth!” added Danielle.

Our Kitchen Garden

The wet weather has been no obstacle to a team of budding gardeners at Arnewood as they prepare the school's new Kitchen Garden under the supervision of green fingered teachers Mr. Cooke and Mrs. Conacher. With produce, tools and topsoil kindly donated by supportive local companies the beds have quickly taken shape. The hope is that with warmer sunshine on the way, the plants will quickly grow and students will be able to see the results of their enthusiastic work.

Speaking about the initiative to put children back in touch with how our food is produced, Mr Cooke said, "We think this is a really important lesson in which students can learn about ecological issues related to their personal and social development". Later in the season, students plan to use their produce as ingredients in meals they will prepare at school.

An evening ending in impromptu Breton dancing around the school hall was one of the more memorable highlights when thirty-three pupils and three members of staff from Collège Saint-Exupéry, Vannes were warmly welcomed by staff and students at The Arnewood School. The group was participating in the return leg of the 28th French Exchange between the two schools.

The Arnewood School spent a gloriously sunny week in Vannes at the end of March. Although the weather was not particularly kind to the French party they still enjoyed their visits to Bath, London, Beaulieu and New Milton, and spent a morning attending lessons at school.

One of the high spots of the week was the family learning evening arranged by the Parents and Friends’ Association when whole families, together with their French guest, participated in sport, cake decorating, cooking, tealight holder decorating, samba band and a quiz. The visit was a huge success and more than a few tears were shed when the group left.

Alternative Hair Show

Hair raising talent was seen in The Alternative Hair Show when more than 80 students competed in the annual hairdressing competition staged by The School of Hairdressing at The Arnewood School.

Students aged 14 to 19 from across the New Forest who study hairdressing at The Arnewood School used recycled materials including magazines and newspapers to create a unique style of hair, makeup and complementing outfit. Each student had to bring their designs to life – including nails and makeup – within a £10 budget and demonstrate how this was to be achieved via a story board plan. They then displayed their completed creations in a glitzy catwalk show at The Arnewood School. The competition that is staged annually as part of the students’ course is also used to raise funds for charity.

This year in excess of £300 will be presented to the Changing Faces charity that supports people with disfigurements to their face, hands or body. Inspiration for their designs included Edward Scissorhands, Lady Gaga, Downton Abbey and Barbie, while the judging panel came from the competitors’ host schools, the local community and industry representatives as well as examination body VTCT.

“We’ve known about the competition since October so have been able to plan for it and get everything ready we need to make,” said Megan Andrews, 15, “but on the day we only had a few hours to style he hair and pull all our designs together.” NVQ Manager Mrs Jo Powell said: “The show attracted more than 200 people and tickets sold out pretty quickly – so much so we could have probably doubled that. We wish we had a bigger venue!”

The winning students were awarded trophies and hairdressing equipment generously sponsored by Capital Hair & Beauty Supplies of Poole.

A group of ten Year 10 students were invited to spend a day at Oxford University. Mr Williamson, Head of Year 10, and Mrs Stroud, Assistant Headteacher, accompanied them. The students were on a mission to find out more about the nature of further education at Oxford University, entry requirements and about student life in this historic and fascinating university town.

Lunch at St Edmund Hall was followed by an Anthropology workshop at the Pitt Rivers Museum and a 'Scavenger Hunt' around the town.

'The day was really interesting and I have a much better idea now what it may be like to study here,' one student said, summing up the general consensus.

Mock Trial Victory

Budding Y9 barristers from Arnewood won the local heats of the Mock Trial Competition at Winchester Crown Court this weekend successfully outwitting young lawyers from five other Hampshire Schools.

The school has entered one or more teams on a number of occasions always performing well. However this year the 16 students, accompanied by Dr. Adeniran, Miss. Brannan, and Mr. Page were awarded first place. All of the students played a part in the team’s victory including Callum Thompson with his remarkable recall of detail, Izzy Campbell with her sharp cross examination, Tegan Gears speaking for four minutes without notes when making opening remarks, and Jacob Rand who closed solidly.

Dr. Adeniran said "the team were absolutely superb and I was proud just to be associated with them!” They now progress to the Regional Finals.

Memories of the Holocaust

Dr Scarlett Epstein spoke to Year 9 students of her experiences as an Austrian Jew during the Holocaust. Students listened with rapt attention as our visitor revisited some of the most frightening moments of her life. Now in her 90s, Dr Epstein talked about when she was only 15 years old and had to journey by herself into Vienna to get visas for her family to allow them to escape the clutches of the Nazis. Scarlett's story seemed so vivid, and as she explained later in a Q&A with students, every time she recounts her story, she relives the horror that she felt as a child. This included seeing Hitler himself, and having to give a Nazi solute so that she didn't stand out among a huge crowd mesmerised by the visiting leader's 'triumphal' entry into Austria.

Scarlett's tale is one of bravery amidst adversity, and it was only the beginning of an amazing life that has seen her travel the world and receive countless honours and awards. Students who stayed behind to talk to Scarlett further were treated to photos of her with Prince Charles, and she even surprised us with the announcement that she is now an honorary Muslim! There was a serious message throughout, as Scarlett told students that she owed her life to those people who helped her, including individuals who risked their lives, and Albania, a country that didn't close its doors to Jewish refugees. It was a sobering thought to realise that Britain and other coutries could have done more during the Holocaust, and students were left thinking about how we should all respond to issues of justice today.

Scarlett sent this message after her visit:

This week has seen the opening of the newly remodelled school canteen with students and staff enjoying the benefits of the greatly improved environment. The old kitchen has been replaced with state of the art equipment which as well as producing great hot and cold meals meets higher standards in terms of energy efficiency and healthy living.

An early visitor, teacher Mr. Mark gave the new canteen the thumbs up deciding to choose The Grill and save the Salad Bar option for later in the week. The seating area has also been improved so that it will accommodate more customers in comfort.

The school operates its catering facilities to provide a healthy and efficient service on behalf of students and staff. The new canteen will allow a greater choice of drinks and meals including milkshakes, fruit juices and tasty pasta pots.

Drugs Awareness

Hampshire Police this week took an active part in the Drugs Awareness element of The Arnewood School's Health Education Programme with a presentation on the criminal risks of drug abuse and the work of a Police drug detection team. The reality of this important work will be emphasized by a Police dog handler bringing a drug detection dog to the school and simulating the work that it does with students.

Dr. Horswell, Deputy Headteacher, said "Criminal Drug Abuse is a small component of a much wider health education programme but an invitation from the Police to be included in its delivery arose and we were delighted to take it. The Police presentations very much emphasize the school's own strong anti-drugs message and the criminal as well as health consequences of drug abuse."

Health Week

There were no apples left for staff at The Arnewood School when students enjoyed a special day munching on the fruit. The free apple day was part of Healthy Week which included drop in clinics for staff and students, and presentations from visiting medical experts.

New Milton Junior & Infants, Tiptoe Primary, Hordle Primary and Ashley Junior & Infants were also taking part in Healthy Week, so Arnewood head Chris Hummerstone abandoned the warmth of his car and cycled to each to see each of their activities.

Sports leaders from Arnewood had been visiting the primaries throughout the week.

Hordle GP Dr. Paul Campbell held a lunchtime clinic for Arnewood staff, while students could pop in and talk about emotional health on a different day. Students also discovered about disability, fitness and stress management. They also presented £474 to the juvenile diabetes charity JDRF.

“All of the schools in New Milton were working together for Healthy Week to encourage our staff and our students to discover new ways of improving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and state of mind,” said Mr Hummerstone, Headteacher at The Arnewood School. “Physical and emotional health depend on each other. Instead of just teaching them these things, the aim of the week was to inspire them.”

New Photo Club

A new photography club, launched today at the request of students, attracted over 20 participants from Key Stage 3 and 4. Students were immediately set the challenge of producing an original photograph taken from an unusual viewpoint. The theme is inspired by the work of Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956).

Rodchenko was a Russian photographer who lived through great change in his country against the backdrop of the Russian Communist Revolution. He made use of the small cameras that were a technological breakthrough of the time. These encouraged him to use unusual and dynamic angles to show off his young and emerging country.

The students will be able to share their work in the school's moderated Flickr group. The club is led by Miss.
The Arnewood School has enjoyed a long tradition of high performance in Mathematics and other subjects. Teacher and students were pleased that over 30% of students have gained a Grade A* or A in Maths. This figures and the GCSE pass rate are well above the National average for the subject. A small number of students who missed out on the higher grade pass now have another opportunity to sit the exam later this year and hopefully will achieve success that will allow them claim the import qualification.

The father of one happy girl in Y11 wrote to her teachers to say "May I take the opportunity to thank you both so very much for all your hard work and efforts ... She was absolutely thrilled to bits."

‘The Golden Masque of Agamemnon’ saw the 50-strong cast bring to life the bloodthirsty tale of the ancient Greek king who sacrifices his own daughter to lead his army to conquer Troy. Adding to the visual experience were costumes made especially for the pupil cast by students at the Arts University College Bournemouth (AUCB), thanks to collaboration between both institutions.

“We chose this play with its focus on drama for those actors who often miss out due to the needs of our annual musical,” said Gary Stonhill, Head of Expressive Arts at the school. “Plus it’s a huge cast and we wanted lots of students involved. Theatre opportunities in school are crucial to the development of pupils both in lessons and in the communication skills they learn for future employment.”

The brief for the costume design students was to create outfits with a “post apocalyptic style” and they worked in small teams creating them tailor-made to the respective cast members. Zoe Keeton, costume tutor at AUCB, said: “Working together with The Arnewood benefits both the school and costume students. Students get a real work-like project to work on, and the Arnewood gets great costumes.”

More than 500 people saw the production at the New Milton school during its three-night run.

It's 'grand' at Arnewood

It’s ‘grand’ at The Arnewood School

We're not taking notes but making them for both our students and the New Milton Music Festival. We’ve taken delivery of a 6ft grand piano to replace our old one, which was suffering from sound board failure and was therefore unfit for purpose.

Our new Irmler grand – purchased from The Piano Agency - has had one former lady owner but was only ever used for local journeys and a bit of light Chopin! Irmler pianos are made for Bluthner Pianos, and are hand-finished at their German factory in Leipzig.

“The students and community alike will enjoy this piano,” said Tim Willis, Director of Music at The Arnewood School. “Musical students will benefit from playing a top quality instrument, and our school musicals and drama productions will be enhanced.”

We are a regular venue for musical events – not least of which is the annual New Milton Music Festival, which is held at the school each year in March. “It’s also hoped the piano will be used for regular musical tuition at the school, and will allow us to extend our current teaching programme. “The purchase of this grand piano represents a major investment for our school, and will benefit our students for many years to come.”

Remembrance

Staff and students at The Arnewood School marked Remembrance with 2 min silence at 1100 on 11 November 2011. Students Chris Robbertse and Rhianna Bellamy laid a wreath of poppies with Headteacher Mr. Christopher Hummerstone whilst student flag bearer Billy Shinn stood vigil. The last post was played by Mr. David Cornford and student Emily Buckby.

Arnewood Students at Oxford

'What is it like to be a student at Oxford University?' This was the question 25 Year 11 Gifted and Talented Students of The Arnewood School were exploring on their day visit to St Edmund Hall in Oxford. The group of students, accompanied by Dr Moran and Mrs Stroud, were following an 'Aspirations Day' organised in liaison between The Arnewood School and St Edmund Hall. The programme included a presentation by the Admissions Tutor Dr Robert Wilkins, a Personal Development Workshop and a joined activity with Oxford undergraduate students of Medicine, Mathematics, English and Chemistry. The quality time spent with the undergraduate students was the highlight of the day for many Arnewood students.

Year 7 students invited more than 30 grandparents to join them for their normal lessons at the New Milton academy.

The ‘mature’ students timetable included French, science ICT and humanities, with their grandchildren using laptops.

Jackie and Melvyn Rand from New Milton had been invited in by grandson Sam. “I wanted to understand what goes on in school today because it’s long term since I was in one,”
said Mr Rand. “But I don’t understand all the terminology,” said Brenda Smith from Highcliffe, in school with husband Ralph thanks to granddaughter Sarah. “What’s ICT? “ But it does bring back a few memories of when we were at school. And it is nice to see how things have progressed in education.”

Dave Cornford, Head of Specialism, said: “Every year our year seven’s ask their grandparents, or if they haven`t any someone close to them, if they’d like to come back to school for the day. “The grandparents love seeing where their grandchildren have lessons and we introduce them to some of the staff. “They get the opportunity to meet the headteacher, and of course we treat them to tea, coffee and cake.”

It is 1066 again this week in the school hall as Mr. Barrett, in his alter ego of King William of Normandy, leads Y7 History students through recreating the Battle of Hastings to learn how England’s future was decided.

Behind their shield wall Harold and his army repulse the Norman assault combating first archers and then cavalry charges; tactics learnt from watching the multimedia instructions they have watched projected on hall’s cinema screen.

Mr. Barrett commented, through a surprisingly convincing French accent, “The battle is fought three times, each with a different scenario”. Nevertheless the outcome is the same, you cannot rewrite history. “William remains the conqueror!”

Record Breaking GCSE Results

Outstanding GCSE results continue at The Arnewood School as this summer the
11-19 Academy has surpassed last year's best ever results at GCSE by 4%,
achieving an excellent 87% 5A*-C.

Students also achieved 67% 5A*-C,
including English and Mathematics, with boys and girls performing very closely
together at the same high level.

Christopher Hummerstone, Headteacher, said "These are outstanding GCSE results and we congratulate
the whole year group on their success. Some students have exceeded our very high
expectations of them and we share their delight at doing so well."

The record breaking results come hot on the heels of last week's exceptional A Level results at the school and mean that more students than ever will be in a position to progress to the school's high performing Sixth Form.

Highest Grades - AS & A Level Results 2011

Chris Hummerstone, headteacher at The Arnewood School, said: “We’re thrilled to see so many of the highest grades of straight A’s and A*s being awarded, improving even further on last year's results.

“We congratulate all our students. Their efforts mean most of them have gained their first choice university place.

“Their success is also a tribute to their families and our staff, who’ve encouraged our young adults to such heights during the last seven years at Arnewood.”

Notable performances are: Josh Byrne (A*, A*, A, B), Jodie Coulson (A, A, A), Nicholas Campbell (A, A, A), Matthew Day (A*, A, A), A. Derham (A,A,A), Peter Gibbons (A*, A, B), Ruby Lowe (A*, A*, A) and Seb Ricahards Taylor (A*, A*, A).

Vocational results are also a great success; notably Craig Pavel who achieved Distinction in both BTEC Sport and BTEC Construction – the equivalent of four A grades!

Y11 Prom - Elmers Court Hotel

A beautiful summer evening, prestigious venue, and glamourous dresses added to a spectacular Y11 Prom this year at the Elmers Court Hotel in Lymington. As tradition has it, students arrived in all manner of transport, this year including a jet ski, horse drawn carriage, and beach buggy!

Thousands of Students Will Benefit From Academy Status

The Arnewood School officially converted to an academy on April 1st. This is a pivotal change, freeing us from council control and giving us a greater say in staff retention and the curriculum. Governors say the conversion will not only improve the quality of education for Arnewood’s own 1,200 students, but will also support initiatives at its six cluster schools.

“The schools in our pyramid have worked together closely for many years and we’re now focussing on measures to improve literacy and numeracy - to make the vulnerable less so - and develop staff and student leadership,” said chair of governors, Mrs. Elizabeth Cook.
“Greater freedom and flexibility as an academy will allow us to build on our existing strengths to offer the best possible education to local children. This is particularly significant at a time when there are public sector constraints. But the school will continue to maintain positive links with the local education authority and other partners."

Under the previous Labour government failing schools were converted to academies, but Conservative education secretary Michael Gove has changed the rules for the best-performing schools such as Arnewood to fast track their applications. As well as receiving their funding straight from government - believed to be about ten per cent more - academies can adapt the national curriculum, vary teachers' pay and conditions, and alter the length of the school day and term times. There are no immediate plans at Arnewood to significantly change its admissions policy, holidays, term times or structures.

For Gifted and Talented Students The Sky Knows No Limits

'What's the plan for this weekend ? Oxford University and a Rendez-vous with a comet!'

This may sound like an ambitious agenda for a weekend but was reality for a group of 14 students of Year 7 and Year 8 - well, almost! The group of students, accompanied by Mr Gough (Head of ICT), Mrs Stroud (Assistant Headteacher) and Haydn Orme (Year 11), visited not only one but two Oxford colleges. Following the traces of 13 British prime ministers and that magician Harry Potter, the students looked around Christ Church College in the morning. In the afternoon they had a unique opportunity to be part of a private tour of New College, given by an undergraduate student of medicine.

Onwards and northwards the group then went on to the Leicester Space Centre. The film show 'We are astronomers' was followed by a hands-on experience in a simulated space craft, preparing to send a probe to a comet. Students gained insights into space science and practised team work and communication skills. Incidentally, they also discovered a new comet which they were allowed to name: watch out for 'Arne-E'!
