Lucky students at The Arnewood School in New Milton are having not one end of year celebration this year but two! In addition to a special event being organised for 180 students in school, parents have surprised them with a privately organised party later in the year once, fingers crossed, COVID restrictions are lifted.
The school event is being supported by the school’s Parents and Staff Association (PSA) and will include a commemoration of the students’ graduation followed by a complimentary meal and entertainment. Headteacher, Nigel Pressnell said,
“We realised students were not going to be able to enjoy our normal extravagant prom this year given concerns around social distancing for the hundreds of parents and children who typically spectate at our preferred venue. Conscious of what a difficult 18 months this has been for our parents and with prom costs being in excess of £100, once tickets, outfits and transport is factored in, we have chosen to do a more inclusive event accessible for all. Like many other schools, we decided to move our plans earlier in the year so students can enjoy a celebration in school, in their year group bubble.”
School Governor and PSA member Jo Ankers is leading the parent group organising the later event. Mrs Ankers commented,
“It has been such a difficult year for our children and staff that we wanted to both alleviate extra pressure on the school and give the students a boost after their exams. Given the incredible job the school has done during lockdown, and how busy they are with centre assessed examinations, we stepped up to arrange a further event for those who wish, providing restrictions are lifted after 21st June”
Meanwhile, approximately 40 older students leaving the Sixth Form, will enjoy a separate formal function before many head off to university in September. This event will be held in accordance with COVID restrictions in place at the time.
